EDM Music | What is EDM | How to make Guide
EDM Music as we know it today goes back to the band Kraftwerk. In the middle of the 1970s Kraftwerk introduced a sound that was fully produced with electronic music instruments, so called synthesizer.
In the year 1982 the american Hip Hop artist Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force released the track “Planet Rock”. It was produced by Arthur Baker and the keyboardist John Robie Atthur. The track became an international hit. The main melody was taken from Kraftwerks`s “Trans-Europe Express”. It is one of the most important EDM Music anthems ever made.
Other artists were inspired by Kraftwerk as well. Three of them: Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson from Detroit. During the 1980s and early 1990s they developed a sound that was later known as Detroit Techno. They are known as one of several fathers of EDM Music for a reason.
Year after year EDM Music became stronger and stronger
In the 1980s synthesizer melodies were used in many pop music tracks. During the 1990s the genre Techno became huge in Europe. It was the blueprint of what we today recognize as EDM Music. Techno developed subgenres like Drum`n`Bass and Trance. Together with House Music, a style derived from Disco Music, it embodied the power of EDM Music.
While EDM Music shaped the taste of the European mainstream audience the US mainstream audience was not aware of this sound. That has changed over the recent years. According to a report of Spin Magazine in 2011 the American dance music scene has finally reached critical mass with a “new rave generation”. Today artists like David Guetta, Tiesto and Avicii have become Rock Stars in the US. Thousand of new ravers are celebrating the EDM Music at festivals like Electric Daisy Carnival and Tomorrowworld
How to produce EDM Music
A frequently asked question is “How can I produce an EDM Music track?”. The good news is: It has never been easier to produce EDM Music. What you need is a computer (notebook or desktop computer) and music software (digital audio workstation = daw) like Logic, Ableton Live or FL Studio. Get some kick, snare, hihat and percussion samples. Then create an unique melody. Bring all the ingredients together in one track and you`re done with your EDM Music track. The final result sounds like this. For more EDM Music check my tracks on Soundcloud.
